Charleston Painting FAQs
How do I know if my home needs repainting?
- Fading or chalky residue
- Peeling or cracking paint
- Soft or exposed wood
- Caulking gaps
- Visible mildew that keeps returning
If you’re unsure, we’re happy to provide a free inspection and give you straightforward advice.
Are you a licensed painter?
Low Country Painting is fully licensed, bonded and insured including general liability and worker’s compensation insurance in the State of South Carolina. The South Carolina LLR requires an active Specialty Contractor’s license for residential painting projects over $500 in value.
How long does an interior project take to complete?
- Single room: 1 day
- Multiple rooms: 2–4 days
- Full interior repaint: 4–7 days
We protect floors, furniture, and fixtures and keep your home clean throughout the process. Many Charleston homeowners are surprised at how fast and stress-free the process can be.
How long does an exterior project take to complete?
Most Charleston exterior projects take:
- 1–2 days for smaller homes
- 3–5 days for average single-family homes
- 5–7+ days for large homes or extensive prep work
The biggest factor isn’t painting — it’s prep. We pressure wash, repair, sand, prime, and protect landscaping before we ever open a paint can.
Weather can also impact scheduling, especially during summer storm season.
Why are porch ceilings painted blue in Charleston, SC?
Great question, it’s a true Lowcountry tradition.
In Charleston, porch ceilings are often painted “haint blue.” Historically, Gullah Geechee culture believed the soft blue color would ward off spirits (“haints”) by mimicking the sky or water.
Today, homeowners still love the look because it
- Brightens shaded porches
- Reflects natural light
- Helps deter certain insects
- Adds classic Charleston curb appeal
We can custom match traditional haint blue shades or recommend a tone that complements your home’s exterior.
What type of interior paint do you use?
For residential walls, we recommend a premium residential grade paint such as Sherwin Williams Duration or PPG Ultralast products. The coating is washable and delivers a long-lasting finish. Matte and Satin sheens are frequently selected.
What type of exterior paint works best in Charleston’s humidity?
We use high-quality, moisture-resistant paints designed for coastal climates that contain:
- Mildew-resistant formulas
- UV-resistant coatings
- Durable primers for humid conditions
- Elastomeric options for stucco when needed
Cutting corners on materials in the Lowcountry leads to premature failure — and we don’t do that.
How often should you repaint exterior siding in Charleston?
Charleston’s heat, humidity, salt air, and storms are tough on paint.
On average:
- Wood siding: Every 5–7 years
- Fiber cement (Hardie board): 7–12 years
- Stucco: 7–10 years
- Trim & doors: 3–6 years depending on exposure
Homes near the coast (Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island) may need repainting sooner due to salt air and intense sun exposure.
We’ll inspect your home and give you an honest timeline based on condition.
Do I need to move furniture from the room?
We ask that interior walls be readily accessible. Our painters will assist with moving larger furniture items. Fragile and loose items on furniture and counter tops should be stored prior to job start.
Do you hang wallpaper?
No, we do not install wallcoverings or vinyl decals. We offer wall covering removal services only.
Do you use subcontractors?
No, our painters are direct employees and fully covered under the company’s general liability and worker’s compensation insurance policies.
Do you pressure wash before painting?
Absolutely. Charleston humidity creates mildew and buildup quickly.
We pressure wash exterior surfaces to remove dirt and chalking, eliminate mildew, improve paint adhesion & extend the life of your finish.
Skipping this step is one of the biggest mistakes in exterior painting.
Do I need HOA approval before painting my home?
If you live in Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, Summerville, or many planned communities, the answer is usually yes.
We can provide color samples, paint specs, & documentation for HOA submission
We’ve worked with countless Charleston-area HOAs and can help simplify the process.
